2026: Chinese Automobiles Accelerate Global Expansion, NEVs Account for Nearly Half of Exports
The opening of 2026 has witnessed a "blistering growth" in China's automobile exports. Latest data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) shows that the country exported a total of 1.352 million vehicles in January-February, a year-on-year surge of 48.4%, maintaining its position as the world's top automobile exporter for three consecutive years. Among them, new energy vehicles (NEVs) led the way with 583,000 units exported, a year-on-year increase of 110%, accounting for 43.1% of total exports. Notably, the export share of NEV passenger vehicles exceeded 50% for the first time in February alone, marking that the goal of "one out of every two Chinese-exported vehicles being a new energy vehicle" is within reach. China's automobile industry has officially entered a new stage of electrification-driven globalization.
· Data Verification: NEVs Become Core Engine for Overseas Expansion
Against the backdrop of only 16 effective working days during the Spring Festival holiday, China's automobile exports still demonstrated strong resilience. Monthly exports in February reached 672,000 units, a year-on-year increase of 52.4% and a mere 1.4% month-on-month decrease, completely offsetting the off-season effect. The explosive growth of NEVs has become the key driver: exports of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) soared by 120% year-on-year, while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) increased by 110%. Core configurations such as 800V fast charging and high-level intelligent driving have precisely met global market demands, completely shaking off the "low-quality and low-price" label.
CAAM and institutions including Morgan Stanley predict that China's total automobile exports in 2026 are expected to hit 8 million units, with NEVs accounting for steadily over 40% of the total and exceeding 50% in some segmented markets. This trend is already evident in the performance of leading enterprises: BYD's overseas sales reached 100,000 units in February, accounting for 52.6% of its total sales, with overseas sales surpassing domestic sales for two consecutive months; Chery maintained its top position with 243,000 cumulative exports, achieving monthly exports exceeding 100,000 units for 10 consecutive months, making overseas markets its absolute main battlefield.
· Global Layout: "Dual-Line Breakthrough" from Emerging to Developed Markets
China's automobile overseas expansion is realizing an upgraded pattern of "dual-wheel drive" consisting of developed and emerging markets. In Southeast Asia, NEV exports surged by over 150% year-on-year in January-February, with Thailand and Indonesia becoming core bases for localized production. The Latin American market showed impressive growth momentum—China has become Brazil's largest automobile import source country for the first time, and sales of brands such as BYD tripled year-on-year. The Middle East market achieved high-end breakthroughs, with a market share of over 58% in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, supported by customized high-temperature cooling systems adapted to local needs.
Breakthroughs in developed markets are particularly remarkable: Chery has entered 18 European countries, with sales in the UK and EU region reaching nearly 20,000 units in January, a year-on-year increase of 224%; NIO and Xpeng have built battery swap networks and charging facilities in Germany and Norway, constructing a full-lifecycle "vehicle + service" ecosystem; Geely has entered the high-end Nordic market through technological cooperation, gradually reversing the stereotypical impression of Chinese automobiles in the international market. Countries along the "Belt and Road" have contributed nearly 60% of export value, becoming a stable growth driver for China's automobile overseas expansion.
· Foundation of Strength: Triple Empowerment from Technology, Policy and Logistics
Behind the export boom lies the concentrated explosion of China's comprehensive industrial chain advantages in the automobile sector. In the power battery field, CATL's all-solid-state batteries have entered the pre-mass production stage, with energy density increased by over 30%; BYD's "Megawatt Fast Charging" technology has achieved a peak charging speed of "2 kilometers per second", and Huawei's all-liquid-cooled megawatt-level super charging solution can supplement 20 kWh of electricity per minute. In the intelligent driving field, the penetration rate of L2-level assisted driving has reached 57.3%, with continuous iterations of technologies such as Huawei Kunpeng ADS 4 intelligent driving system and Xpeng Turing AI chip.
The improvement of policy and logistics systems has provided strong support for overseas expansion. Nine government departments have jointly issued policies to optimize transportation processes and shorten customs clearance time. The export licensing system for pure electric passenger vehicles implemented on January 1, 2026, has promoted the standardized development of the industry. Logistics channels continue to expand: China-Europe Railway Express operated 3,501 trains in January-February, with Dongfeng special trains stably transporting automobiles; the first Chengdu-Xiamen "Silk Road Maritime" rail-sea intermodal train was launched, realizing 7-day direct transportation to Southeast Asia, reducing logistics costs by 15% and improving efficiency by 60%. Fourteen Chinese automobile enterprises have planned overseas production capacity of 3 million units, and overseas output is expected to exceed 1 million units in 2026, marking a leap from "Made in China" to "Globally Made".
· Challenges and Outlook: Consolidating Global Competitiveness in Uncharted Waters
Despite remarkable achievements, China's automobile overseas expansion still faces challenges such as trade barriers. Mexico has raised tariffs on imports from China to 50%, and the EU continues to advance anti-subsidy investigations. Geopolitical fluctuations are testing the resilience of enterprises' layouts. In response, Chinese automobile companies are breaking through with "full-value chain system output": BYD has built local production plants in Thailand and Hungary, completing a comprehensive R&D and manufacturing system in 18 months; Chery has established a joint-venture factory in Spain, driving core component suppliers to "go overseas as a group".
Hou Fushen, Vice Chairman of the China Society of Automotive Engineers, stated: "Today, China is not only the world's largest automobile market but also a 'weather vane' for new automobile technologies." From "going global" to "taking root", and from "product export" to "ecosystem output", Chinese automobiles in 2026 are writing a new chapter of "China Intelligent Manufacturing" in the global market with NEVs as the brush and technology as the ink. As the annual export target approaches 8 million units, the global vision of "one out of every two Chinese vehicles being a new energy vehicle" is rapidly becoming a reality.
