Recent Situation of the U.S. Automotive Market

The U.S. automotive market is currently undergoing a notable structural adjustment in the first quarter of 2026. Affected by multiple factors including high interest rates, fading policy support and weak consumer confidence, the overall vehicle market remains sluggish, while the previously rapid electrification process has slowed down significantly. Traditional fuel vehicles and hybrid vehicles are regaining market vitality.

In the first quarter, total new car sales in the United States reached 3.71 million units, representing a year-on-year decline of 5.5%. Sales of battery electric vehicles dropped sharply to 214,000 units, down 28% from the same period last year. The penetration rate of electric vehicles fell to 5.8%, which is far lower than its historical high level. The main reasons for the decline include the expiration of the federal $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit, high auto loan interest rates, continuously high new car prices, rising fuel prices and widespread wait-and-see sentiment among consumers.

Highly differentiated trends can be seen across brands. Tesla still holds a dominant position in the U.S. electric vehicle market, occupying 54.2% of the EV share, and its Model Y achieved stable growth against the downward market trend. By contrast, electric vehicle sales of Ford, General Motors and major European brands continued to slump. Meanwhile, hybrid models launched by Toyota, Hyundai and other brands have become bestsellers, becoming the core driving force for market growth.

In response to market changes, major U.S. local automakers have adjusted their development strategies substantially. General Motors and Ford have carried out layoffs, production cuts and capacity optimization, reduced investment in pure electric projects, and shifted more resources to hybrid technologies. The U.S. auto industry has officially abandoned its previous radical electrification roadmap, and entered a new stage featuring the coexistence of fuel, hybrid and electric vehicles with prudent and steady transformation.
