Dongfeng and Stellantis Boost European Joint Venture: Chinese Automakers Enter New Phase of Ecological Globalization
China's Dongfeng Motor Group and European automotive giant Stellantis Group recently officially signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU), announcing the deepening of their global strategic cooperation and plans to jointly establish a joint venture in Europe. This marks a crucial step in the transformation of China's automotive industry from "product export" to "brand export and ecological export."
Under the framework of the agreement, the proposed joint venture will initially be fully responsible for the sales, distribution, manufacturing, procurement, and engineering R&D of Dongfeng's new energy vehicles in agreed European markets. Meanwhile, the two parties will explore cooperation on the sales and distribution of Voyah, Dongfeng's high-end intelligent electric brand, in the European market. This cooperation is not an isolated move. Earlier on May 15, Dongfeng Motor, together with Stellantis and several Chinese investment institutions, completed a strategic investment signing of over 8 billion yuan to promote the transformation and upgrading of Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobile Company (DPCA). It is planned to launch multiple new energy vehicle models starting from 2027 and introduce the Jeep brand for global sales. During its "2026 Investor Day" event at the end of May, Stellantis Group also incorporated its cooperation with Dongfeng into the strategic framework of "Partnerships to Complement Core Capabilities." Antonio Filosa, CEO of Stellantis, clearly stated that in-depth synergy with Chinese enterprises is a core pillar of the group's "FaSTLAne 2030" five-year strategy.
As a key initiative of Dongfeng's "Global Voyage" globalization plan, this European joint venture will integrate the core resources of both parties: Dongfeng Motor will export its new energy technologies and intelligent product matrix, while Stellantis will provide local European market channels, manufacturing bases, and compliance experience. Notably, Voyah, Dongfeng's subsidiary brand, has achieved mass production of L3-level autonomous driving technology. Equipped with Huawei's Kunpeng Intelligent Driving ADS 4 solution and a full-redundancy safety architecture, it will deliver an intelligent travel experience compliant with local regulations in the European market. Stellantis' more than 30 production bases and comprehensive after-sales service network in Europe will provide support for the rapid penetration of Dongfeng's models in the market.
Industry analysts point out that this cooperation comes at a critical window for the technological iteration and globalization layout of China's new energy vehicle industry. Data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) shows that China's new energy vehicle exports reached 430,000 units in April 2026, a year-on-year surge of 110%. Meanwhile, Europe, as a core global automotive market, is facing a production capacity gap in its electrification transformation. At the same time, trade barriers such as the EU's provisional anti-subsidy tariffs have forced Chinese automakers to accelerate local production. The joint venture model between Dongfeng and Stellantis provides a new paradigm for addressing trade barriers. The German Bochum Automotive Research Institute commented in its latest report: "The technological innovation capabilities of China's automotive industry and Europe's industrial foundation form a high degree of complementarity, and such cooperation will define the future pattern of the global automotive industry."
A relevant person in charge of Dongfeng Motor stated that the company will take this cooperation as an opportunity to advance the "Oriental Wind Rising 2030" plan, aiming to achieve global sales of 5 million units by 2030, with overseas sales accounting for 40%. With the launch of the joint venture, China's automotive industry will realize a comprehensive upgrade from technology export and product export to ecological synergy, injecting new momentum into the electrification and intelligent transformation of the global automotive industry.
