Renault and Ford Forge Historic Strategic Partnership to Boost Affordable Electric Vehicles in Europe
France’s Groupe Renault and U.S.-based Ford Motor Company jointly announced a landmark strategic partnership today, focusing on the European market to co-develop two all-electric affordable passenger vehicles under the Ford brand, while exploring in-depth collaboration in the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment. The move is widely regarded as a key layout by global automotive giants to navigate the electric transformation.
Under the signed cooperation agreement, the two new Ford-branded electric models will be built on Renault Group’s Ampere pure electric platform, leveraging Renault’s technological expertise and manufacturing advantages in the electric vehicle sector. These vehicles will be produced at Renault Group’s factories in northern France, integrating Ford’s iconic design language and driving dynamics tuning. The first model is expected to make its European showroom debut in early 2028. François Provost, Chief Executive Officer of Renault Group, stated that this partnership demonstrates Renault’s competitive edge as a partner in the European market, and through resource integration, will enhance innovation capability and responsiveness in the rapidly evolving market.
Beyond passenger vehicles, the two parties also signed a letter of intent for cooperation in European light commercial vehicles (LCVs), planning to jointly develop and produce selected models under both the Renault and Ford brands to further expand the scope of collaboration. Jim Farley, President and Chief Executive Officer of Ford Motor Company, emphasized that the strategic partnership with Renault is a crucial step in Ford’s European business transformation. It will combine Renault’s industrial scale and electrification assets with Ford’s design DNA to create products for consumers that balance driving pleasure and practicality.
Industry analysts point out that this cross-border cooperation highlights the trend of resource integration in the global automotive industry amid the electric transformation. As one of the world’s most aggressive markets in terms of electrification policies, Europe is witnessing intensifying competition in the affordable electric vehicle segment. The alliance between Renault and Ford will generate economies of scale, effectively reducing R&D and manufacturing costs. Data shows that Europe’s electric vehicle market penetration rate exceeded 35% in 2025, yet there remains a supply gap in affordable models – a void that the co-developed products are expected to fill.
Notably, this cooperation model provides a new paradigm for traditional automakers to adapt to industry changes: achieving technological sharing and market expansion through complementary advantages, rather than operating in isolation. Renault’s Ampere platform, as a leading pure electric architecture in Europe, has already achieved highly modular and large-scale production; Ford’s participation will further expand the platform’s market reach. Meanwhile, Ford will leverage Renault’s local manufacturing capabilities and supply chain resources to accelerate its European electric product layout, avoiding resource waste from redundant construction.
Currently, the two parties have established a joint working group to advance the implementation of the cooperation, with subsequent disclosure of specific details such as vehicle technical parameters, production capacity planning, and LCV collaboration arrangements. The industry expects that this partnership will drive the coordinated development of Europe’s electric vehicle industry chain, serving as a reference for cross-border integration in the global automotive sector.
