Cockpit-Driving Integration Technology Reshapes Smart Cars, NEV Penetration Rate Hits New High

The 2026 Beijing Auto Show is in full swing. At this year's show, "cockpit-driving integration" technology has emerged as the most striking industry breakthrough, marking the official entry of smart cars into the era of "integrated vehicle intelligence." Meanwhile, data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on May 11 shows that in April, China's new energy vehicle (NEV) sales reached 1.344 million units, a year-on-year increase of 9.7%, with the new car market share exceeding 53% for the first time, reaching 53.2%. The dual dividends of "technological innovation + market expansion" in the industry continue to be released.

At the auto show, a number of new models equipped with cockpit-driving integration technology made their debuts. The core breakthrough of this technology lies in breaking the independent operation mode of the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) and cockpit system in traditional smart cars, realizing "one brain controlling the entire vehicle" through a central computing architecture. Horizon Robotics' "Starry Sky," China's first mass-produced cockpit-driving integration chip, has become the technical core. Adopting a 5nm process with a computing power of 650 TOPS, it features an innovative "Castle" physical isolation architecture that not only ensures the highest ASIL-D safety level for the ADAS but also achieves seamless collaboration between the cockpit and driving systems. The hardware cost per vehicle can be reduced by 1,500-4,000 yuan, and the automaker's R&D cycle is shortened from 18 months to 8 months.

During on-site experiences at booths of Leapmotor, Xpeng, Geely, and other brands, the reporter found that models equipped with this technology have achieved scenario-based intelligent responses. The Leapmotor D19 can complete the entire process of charging pile search, route planning, and reservation through voice commands; the Xpeng Ultra supports cross-scenario linkage with the "Ready to Depart" function, automatically turning off home appliances and preheating the vehicle; the Geely Galaxy Battleship 700 can predict terrain 500 milliseconds in advance, automatically adjusting off-road mode parameters, with an all-terrain response speed 25 times faster than traditional systems. According to calculations by Gaogong Intelligence, the cockpit-driving integration solution can reduce the overall vehicle cost by about 30%, promoting high-end configurations such as lidar to sink to models priced at around 80,000 yuan.

Market data also confirms the vitality of the industry's development. In the first four months of 2026, China's NEV production and sales reached 4.285 million units and 4.304 million units respectively, with exports of 1.384 million units, a year-on-year increase of 120%. Chen Shihua, Deputy Secretary-General of CAAM, stated that the sustained growth of the NEV market is driven by both technological innovation and policy support. The current NEV purchase tax halving policy (2026-2027) explicitly provides tax incentives for models adopting the battery swapping mode, further lowering the consumption threshold.

Industry experts point out that the implementation of cockpit-driving integration technology is restructuring the automotive industry ecosystem. The supply chain is shifting from a traditional "chain relationship" to a "networked symbiosis," with technology suppliers such as Horizon Robotics and Huawei moving from behind the scenes to the forefront. ZuoSi Automotive Research predicts that the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of China's cockpit-driving integration market will reach 36% between 2026 and 2030. Meanwhile, as subsidy policies tilt toward technology-driven products, the industry will accelerate the elimination of low-quality production capacity, promoting the in-depth transformation of NEVs toward high-endization and intelligence.
