Chinese Auto Brands Surpass 15% Market Share in European Pure Electric Vehicle Sales for the First Time

According to the latest industry data, in April this year, the share of pure electric vehicles (EVs) sold by Chinese auto brands in Europe exceeded 15% for the first time, as local consumers continue to show growing enthusiasm for Chinese models. In April, sales of pure electric vehicles from Chinese brands such as BYD and Chery in Europe reached 38,281 units, more than doubling year-on-year. The overall market share of Chinese brands in Europe's passenger car sector is now approaching 10%. As European legacy automakers struggle to launch cost-effective electric models and face a lack of technological competitiveness, Chinese automakers are leveraging these gaps to expand into the European market, winning over a large number of value-conscious consumers.

South Africa Proposes New Regulations to Support Local Power Battery Industry

South Africa plans to adjust its automotive industry incentive policies, increasing support for power battery manufacturers in an effort to become a hub for power battery production. The country's Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition recently released a draft revision of the core automotive industry plan, proposing higher production credits for battery manufacturers and increased tariff rebates. Once the policy takes effect, South Africa is expected to transform from an exporter of fully assembled vehicles into a hub for processing mineral resources for power batteries.

Mercedes-Benz Plans to Launch Urban Assisted Driving System in Germany by Year-End

Mercedes-Benz Group recently announced that it plans to launch an urban point-to-point assisted driving system in Germany starting from the end of this year, aiming to become one of the first automakers in Europe to bring this technology to market. Joerg Burzer, Chief Technology Officer of Mercedes-Benz, wrote in a post on LinkedIn following a meeting with the German Ministry of Transport in Berlin that the company's assisted driving system will initially roll out in select German cities by the end of 2026, with a nationwide rollout gradually beginning in early 2027.

Nissan Subsidiary Abandons UK Electric Vehicle Powertrain Production Plan

According to a Nikkei report on May 24, Nissan subsidiary JATCO has canceled plans to produce electric vehicle powertrains at its Sunderland plant in the UK, citing weak demand for the parent company's EVs in the European market. JATCO had announced in January 2025 that it planned to invest £48.7 million in the Sunderland facility to produce up to 340,000 units per year of integrated EV powertrains combining an electric motor, inverter, and reducer for Nissan.

Hyundai to Recall Over 421,000 Vehicles in the U.S. Due to Braking Software Fault

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced that Hyundai will recall 421,078 vehicles in the United States. A defect in the front camera software of the affected vehicles may cause the forward collision avoidance system to activate prematurely and brake without reason, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall involves certain 2025–2026 model year Santa Cruz and Tucson vehicles. Hyundai dealers will update the front camera software for affected vehicles free of charge.

Tesla Recalls Over 14,500 Model Y Vehicles in the U.S. Over Missing Payload Certification Labels

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently announced that Tesla will recall 14,575 Model Y vehicles in the United States due to missing payload specification certification labels. The agency stated that the absence of such labels could lead to vehicle overloading, thereby increasing the risk of traffic accidents. Tesla will inspect the affected vehicles and install the missing labels.
