"ORA 5's petrol and hybrid variants aim to seal the brand's strategic shift

Great Wall’s ORA brand is accelerating its strategic shift from “premium electric compact car” to “global fashion premium auto.” At the Auto China 2024, ORA officially launched the hybrid and petrol versions of the ORA 5. The hybrid starts at an MSRP of RMB 89,800, and the petrol version at RMB 79,800. With limited-time exchange offers, prices drop to RMB 79,800 and RMB 69,800 respectively.

Behind this pricing is Great Wall’s “Guiyuan Platform,” enabling high integration and parts commonality to achieve cost efficiency at scale.

According to Lü Wenbin, General Manager of Great Wall ORA, introducing hybrid and petrol options is not a retreat from electrification. Rather, it is a pragmatic, globally-minded response to real-world user needs. The ORA 5 Hybrid is the first model to feature Great Wall’s new-generation Hi2 intelligent hybrid system, including a 1.5T hybrid-specific engine, intelligent drive module, and a high-power battery pack, with a pioneering P3 motor decoupling mechanism. The system supports full-speed-range mode switching via three engines and six driving modes. Great Wall has invested over 5,000 engineers and 14 years in hybrid R&D.

The petrol version is powered by Great Wall’s sixth-generation 1.5T engine and third-generation dual-clutch transmission.

Notably, both the hybrid and petrol ORA 5 come standard with urban NOA capability and lidar — rare in the sub-RMB 100,000 segment — highlighting Great Wall’s ongoing push to democratize intelligent driving features. This year, Great Wall’s Beijing Auto Show theme is “Covenant,” with Lü repeatedly emphasizing a spirit of “contract” — no conceptual gimmicks or exaggerated claims.

To validate real-world fuel efficiency, the ORA 5 Hybrid completed a 3,004-km test drive across four Chinese municipalities (Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing), covering 10 typical driving conditions — from urban congestion and highway cruising to mountain climbs — with a maximum elevation difference of 1,445 meters and varied weather. The result: a combined fuel consumption of 3.74 liters per 100 km, earning a Guinness World Records title for the lowest fuel consumption by a production hybrid SUV traversing China’s municipalities. This contrasts sharply with some industry “1L or 2L” claims that rely on specific test-cycle conditions.

On the brand front, ORA is expanding from its earlier focus on female users to a broader young demographic, while keeping its core “fashionable, refined, and stylish” identity. Lü clarified that ORA differs from Haval — the latter being utilitarian and value-focused, while ORA stays on the fashion premium route.

Looking ahead, ORA plans sedans, wagons, and more body styles under its “one platform, multiple powertrains, multiple body types” Guiyuan philosophy. The ORA 5 Sport edition also debuted at the auto show, with chassis tuning by former Great Wall BMW MINI team members and dedicated sporty kits, targeting young driving enthusiasts.

Globally, ORA is now present in more than 50 countries and regions, with nearly 600,000 cumulative users. The ORA 5 EV launched in China last December, entered Thailand in March, and has recently begun shipments to Brazil and Europe.

Lü revealed that ORA plans roughly one new product move per month this year. Existing models like the Ballet Cat will not be discontinued; some will receive powertrain updates. In the future, ORA will cover more price segments and introduce sedans, wagons, and additional models.
